Sculptor and installation artist based in Whitehorse, Yukon
Michel Gignac (b. 1989, Saskatoon, Canada) lives and works in Whitehorse, Yukon and received his BFA from the Alberta University of Art & Design in 2012. Michel’s works are often playful experiences that inspire a child-like sense of curiosity and wonder. His range of materials are everything from scavenged toilet paper rolls to coded interactive electronics to snow. These interests have manifested in gallery installations, snow carvings, public art, as well as set design and fabrication for theatre and film.
Michel often seeks collaborative opportunities to share perspectives and combine skills to inspire new directions. He has worked with Alia Shahab on Ghost Carwash for Wreck City’s Penguin Carwash, an interactive electronic installation as well as Trailing commissioned by the City of Calgary’s Public Art Program. He has also collaborated with French artist Gorellaume to create Through the Thought Process and Shared Effort, two three-dimensional large-scale murals in Whitehorse.
In the past decade, Michel has exhibited both nationally and internationally at places such as Governor’s Island Figment Art Festival (New York), AKA Gallery (Saskatoon), Yukon Art Centre (Whitehorse), Theatre in the Bush (Gatineau, Québec), S(h)iver Arts Festival (Dawson City), Centre culturel franco-manitobain (Winnipeg), Contemporary Calgary (Alberta), Anchorage Museum (Alaska).
When he is not making his own art, he can often be found developing art workshops for youth and adults.
